The greenwood crafts or, as they are variously termed, the small round-wood or coppice and
underwood crafts, are here defined as crafts whose basic raw material is ‘green’ or freshly cut
coppiced wood, cleft not sawn. Chestnut and hazel are the most commonly worked species,
followed by willow, oak, birch, alder and sycamore.Apart from lightweight chainsaws, which have largely replaced bill hooks for wood-cutting, the equipment comprises mainly hand tools or, in the case of rake-making and pole-lathe turnery, simple machines.

1 Chestnut workers: mainly fencing materials: centred in Kent and East Sussex.
2 Hazel workers: hurdles, spars, garden ware, etc: concentrated in southern England, from Dorset
through to West Sussex.
3 Pole-lathe turners: turned wares and hand-made furniture: wide distribution.
4 Specialist firewood and charcoal producers, cutting their own wood: wide distribution.
5 Specialist wood-cutters: semi-processed/intermediate products, e.g. thatching and hedging wood, hurdle wood, poles, rails, stakes, rails, pea sticks and faggots: mainly southern England.

Leatherwork is a particularly satisfying craft project. Its durability and natural qualities are especially suited to Cub Scouts. Whether they stamp, tool, carve or simply make something out of finished leather, they will have a project they like and it will be useful as well.
Since leather is relatively expensive, projects that use rounders practice pieces, scraps, or half backs are very useful. Rounders are inexpensive precut 3 1/4" round pieces that are very versatile. Coups, slides, coasters, bookmarks
and key chains are a few of the small projects that lend themselves to rounders.
Practice pieces are another precut shape in leather that is even more inexpensive and with a little imagination can be a coups, a slide, a book mark, a key chain or whatever several attached together could be.Half backs are approximately 3 1/2" by 4 1/2" precut pieces that are a little more expensive, but do make change purses, picture frames, and folded key chains.Scrap leather is usually available at leather shops and its limits are confined only by the size of the piece and imagination. An Exacto knife or leather knife will be needed to cut the projects out. This is a difficult task, so much care should be exercised in using them. Cutting out projects in tooling leather is more suited to the Den leader. Once a project is chosen and cut out, leather can be decorated by stamping, tooling or carving. Stamping is
imprinting a design stamp into the leather surface by tapping the tool with a wooden hammer. It is the easiest to learn and the boys love to pound a variety of stamps into their leather projects. Tooling leather is a second way of decorating. A design is traced on and then is pressed into damp leather by either outlining a design or depressing the background of a design. To do it, a modeling tool with a special end or orange stick is needed.

Wood carving prevails all over India since time immemorial with several designing traits in different regions. India is cherishing the pleasure of wood carving from the dawn of civilization. Every state with their own cultural taste has introduced a unique style which consequently has led them to having a distinct identity of their own. Every state has their own cultural tradition and they have chosen wood as a prime medium to bring forth their
creativity. Tamilnadu, a rich province with great cultural heritage is engrossed in creating giant chariots decorated with elegant figurines. Karnataka, a hub of exotic sandal wood is immersed in creating beautiful elephants, pens, pen-holders, combs, trays, boxes, key holders, small figurines, chiseled with their own delicacies. Rajasthan, as known to all,
is perpetually famous for their wooden decorations on doors, wooden panels, frames, pillars, brackets etc. They even carve out beautiful animal figurines, the famous Rajasthani puppets, exquisite jewelry boxes etc.

DR MANJUSMITA DASH* *Faculty, Department of Business Administration, Utkal University, Vani vihar,Bhubaneswar – 4, Orissa, India. ABSTRACT India occupies a unique place in India in respect of handicrafts and arts. The subject matter of Indian handicrafts is derived from the cosmographic myths and legends of the Indian culture and civilization as described with fabulous imagination in the epics and the sacred scriptures. The present handicrafts are largely the visual manifests produced with remarkable fidelity to the historical continuance of thousands of years of Indian culture. But handicrafts have not received as much attention as they deserve. The performance of the existing institutional infrastructure both for financing and marketing of handicrafts is far from satisfaction. Artisans are depending on the middlemen for raw materials, finance and market for the finished products because of their illiteracy, ignorance and poverty. The success of handicrafts depends on how well the artisans can produce the articles in keeping with the tastes and preferences of consumers. Industrialization in any kind of arts and crafts, must be recognized by the market of consumers, through the exchange of commodities in order to make the artistic and ethnic value with a touch of innovation. __________________________________________________________________________________________

Abstract: In this study, the relationship between environmental innovation and sustainability is analyzed in 168 handicraft businesses in the Mexican states of Oaxaca, Puebla, and Tlaxcala. The results show a direct, positive relationship between environmental innovation and sustainability in three dimensions: economic, social, and environmental. In terms of determination, the variables that best explain sustainability are: organization type, product innovation, and process innovation. The age of the handicraft businesses was not a significant factor in explaining sustainability. This study concludes that handicraft businesses make sustainable choices more as a result of a desire for profit maximization than as a result of environmental consciousness, as can be explained by neoclassical view of economics.
Keywords: environmental innovation; sustainability; handicraft businesses
